Ach’s late summer crop of essential black jazz music, some still fairly fresh releases, some recent reissues. — Essential Black Jazz. It starts with Brazilian flavor: Lloyd McNeill’s TZIGANE. Later, one of the last recordings by Burkina Faso native Amadou Balaké. Solid Afro Latin jazz comes with AFRA JUM by Francisco Mora. All framed by two musical gems: Kahil El’Zabar’s IN THE SPIRIT (featuring David Murray) and William Parker’s MOVE ON UP, his 11-minute homage to Curtis Mayfields. And at the center of the movement JUJU’s legendary poem NIA.
